प्रज्ञावन्तौ नरश्रेष्ठाव् अस्मिंल् लोके नराधिप ॥
त्वन्निमित्तम् अतो नेमौ किं चिज् जिह्मं वदिष्यतः ॥
इति मे नैष्ठिकी बुद्धिर् वर्तते कुरुनन्दन ॥
न चार्थहेतोर् धर्मज्ञौ वक्ष्यतः पक्षसंश्रितम् ॥
एतद् धि परमं श्रेयो मेनाते तव भारत ॥
prajñāvantau naraśreṣṭhāv asmiṃl loke narādhipa ||
tvannimittam ato nemau kiṃ cij jihmaṃ vadiṣyataḥ ||
iti me naiṣṭhikī buddhir vartate kurunandana ||
na cārthahetor dharmajñau vakṣyataḥ pakṣasaṃśritam ||
etad dhi paramaṃ śreyo menāte tava bhārata ||
"Wise, the best of men in this world, O lord of men, for your sake they will not say anything crooked -- such is my firm conviction, O joy of the Kurus. And these knowers of dharma will not speak with partiality for the sake of gain, for they consider this your highest good, O Bharata."

Here Karna's slander of self-interest is refuted. It is telling that Vidura directly dismisses the accusation: knowers of dharma do not trade counsel or deceive for a price. This is evidence that the righteous cannot be bought or swayed into bias: their word is free from gain. Thus the text reveals the incorruptibility of Bhishma and Drona; and Karna's slander crumbles before their selflessness.
