नगमेघप्रतीकाशा दिवम् आवृत्य विष्ठिता ॥
आयता विपुला श्लक्ष्णा विपाप्मा विगतक्लमा ॥
उत्तमद्रव्यसंपन्ना मणिप्राकारमालिनी ॥
बहुरत्ना बहुधना सुकृता विश्वकर्मणा ॥
न दाशार्ही सुधर्मा वा ब्रह्मणो वापि तादृशी ॥
आसीद् रूपेण संपन्ना यां चक्रे ऽप्रतिमां मयः ॥

nagameghapratīkāśā divam āvṛtya viṣṭhitā ||
āyatā vipulā ślakṣṇā vipāpmā vigataklamā ||
uttamadravyasaṃpannā maṇiprākāramālinī ||
bahuratnā bahudhanā sukṛtā viśvakarmaṇā ||
na dāśārhī sudharmā vā brahmaṇo vāpi tādṛśī ||
āsīd rūpeṇa saṃpannā yāṃ cakre 'pratimāṃ mayaḥ ||

शब्दशः अर्थ

संस्कृतIASTअर्थ

नग-मेघ-प्रतीकाशाnaga-megha-pratīkāśālike a mountain [or] a cloud,

दिवम् आवृत्य विष्ठिताdivam āvṛtya viṣṭhitāveiling the sky, it towered,

आयता विपुला श्लक्ष्णाāyatā vipulā ślakṣṇāextensive, vast, smooth,

विपाप्मा विगत-क्लमाvipāpmā vigata-klamāfaultless, without [any trace of] weariness;

उत्तम-द्रव्य-संपन्नाuttama-dravya-saṃpannāendowed with the finest materials,

मणि-प्राकार-मालिनीmaṇi-prākāra-mālinīgirdled with jewel-studded walls,

बहु-रत्ना बहु-धनाbahu-ratnā bahu-dhanārich in gems, rich in treasures,

सु-कृता विश्वकर्मणाsu-kṛtā viśvakarmaṇābeautifully wrought by Vishvakarman;

न दाशार्ही सुधर्मा वाna dāśārhī sudharmā vāneither Sudharma, [the hall] of the Dasharhas,

ब्रह्मणः वा अपि तादृशीbrahmaṇaḥ vā api tādṛśīnor even that of Brahma was

आसीत् रूपेण संपन्नाāsīt rūpeṇa saṃpannāendowed with such beauty

याम् चक्रे अप्रतिमाम् मयःyām cakre apratimām mayaḥas the incomparable [hall] that Maya made.

अनुवाद

"Like a mountain or a cloud, veiling the sky, it towered — extensive, vast, smooth, faultless, untiring [to behold]; endowed with the finest materials, girdled with jewel-studded walls, rich in gems and treasures, beautifully wrought by Vishvakarman. Neither Sudharma, the hall of the Dasharhas, nor even that of Brahma was endowed with such beauty as this incomparable hall that Maya made."

भाष्य

Here the earthly dwelling surpasses the halls of the gods — even the hall of Brahma. It is telling that this superiority is given to the house of the righteous king, not of a proud lord: where dharma rules, the dwelling is worthy of more than heaven itself. This is no boast, but a sign of the greatness of Yudhishthira's righteous kingdom. Thus scripture shows the incomparability of the palace; and further, its fearsome guardians follow.
