यावत् एव न संबुद्धम्yāvat eva na saṃbuddhamas long as [our might] has not awakened,
तावत् एव भवेत् तवtāvat eva bhavet tavaso long [would your superiority have lasted];
विषह्यम् एतत् अस्माकम्viṣahyam etat asmākam[only until then] would this our [strength] be bearable for you, —
अतः राजन् ब्रवीमि तेataḥ rājan bravīmi tetherefore, O king, I say to you;
जहि त्वम् सदृशेषु एवjahi tvam sadṛśeṣu evaabandon, at least among equals,
मानम् दर्पम् च मागधmānam darpam ca māgadha[your] arrogance and pride, O Magadha;

Here Krishna shows mercy even to the enemy: he offers him a way to renounce his pride and be saved. It is telling that the Lord does not crave the tyrant's destruction but grants him a path to life through humility. Thus scripture shows that even chastisement is preceded by a call to repentance; what follows are examples of fallen men of pride.
