जरासंध उवाच
नाजितान् वै नरपतीन् अहम् आदद्मि कांश् चन ॥
जितः कः पर्यवस्थाता को ऽत्र यो न मया जितः ॥
क्षत्रियस्यैतद् एवाहुर् धर्म्यं कृष्णोपजीवनम् ॥
विक्रम्य वशम् आनीय कामतो यत् समाचरेत् ॥
jarāsaṃdha uvāca
nājitān vai narapatīn aham ādadmi kāṃś cana ||
jitaḥ kaḥ paryavasthātā ko 'tra yo na mayā jitaḥ ||
kṣatriyasyaitad evāhur dharmyaṃ kṛṣṇopajīvanam ||
vikramya vaśam ānīya kāmato yat samācaret ||
Jarasandha said: “I do not take captive kings who are unconquered; and once conquered, who opposes me? Who here is not conquered by me? This precisely, O Krishna, is called the lawful pursuit of a kshatriya: having subdued [the foe] by valor, to do with him whatever one wishes.”

Here the tyrant dresses villainy in the garments of dharma — 'such, indeed, is the law of the kshatriya.' It is telling how deftly falsehood invokes a rule while perverting it: he interprets the right of victory as the right to do any evil to the vanquished. Thus scripture shows how dangerous is the distortion of dharma in justification of cruelty; what follows is his refusal.
