ततो विमनसः सर्वे त्रस्ताः क्षुद्रमृगा इव ॥
आसन् सुयोधनामात्याः स च राजा जयद्रथः ॥
अथोत्थाय सहामात्यैर् दीनः शिबिरम् आत्मनः ॥
आयात् सौवीरसिन्धूनाम् ईश्वरो भृशदुःखितः ॥
स मन्त्रकाले संमन्त्र्य सर्वा नैःश्रेयसीः क्रियाः ॥
सुयोधनम् इदं वाक्यम् अब्रवीद् राजसंसदि ॥
tato vimanasaḥ sarve trastāḥ kṣudramṛgā iva ||
āsan suyodhanāmātyāḥ sa ca rājā jayadrathaḥ ||
athotthāya sahāmātyair dīnaḥ śibiram ātmanaḥ ||
āyāt sauvīrasindhūnām īśvaro bhṛśaduḥkhitaḥ ||
sa mantrakāle saṃmantrya sarvā naiḥśreyasīḥ kriyāḥ ||
suyodhanam idaṃ vākyam abravīd rājasaṃsadi ||
"Then all, fallen in spirit, frightened like timid game, were the counselors of Suyodhana, and King Jayadratha too. Then, rising with his counselors, dejected, the lord of the Sauviras and Sindhus came to his own camp, grievously distressed. Taking counsel at the hour of deliberation about all salutary measures, he spoke this word to Suyodhana in the assembly of kings."

Krishna conveys even the enemy's mood: "trastāḥ kṣudramṛgāḥ iva", "frightened, like timid game." It is significant that the fearsome king of Sindhu and Duryodhana's counselors are likened to small creatures sensing the hunter: an unrighteous cause robs even the strong of courage. Thus Arjuna's vow has already done its work without a drop of blood shed — it has planted fear in the enemy camp. The verse teaches that a guilty conscience makes even the powerful timid: where there is no foothold in truth, the fearsome turns into trembling game, and numerical superiority does not restore the spirit that has been lost.
