माम् असौ पुत्रहन्तेति श्वो ऽभियाता धनंजयः ॥
प्रतिज्ञातो हि सेनाया मध्ये तेन वधो मम ॥
तां न देवा न गन्धर्वा नासुरोरगराक्षसाः ॥
उत्सहन्ते ऽन्यथा कर्तुं प्रतिज्ञां सव्यसाचिनः ॥

अनुवाद
"[Deeming] me the slayer of his son, tomorrow Dhananjaya will fall upon [us] — for amid the army he has vowed my death. That vow of Savyasachin neither gods nor gandharvas, nor asuras, serpents, and rakshasas have the power to avert."

Jayadratha himself pronounces what will become his sentence: "pratijñāṃ savyasācinaḥ" — Arjuna's vow cannot be revoked even by the gods. It is significant that the guilty one grasps the power of the impending punishment more clearly than anyone: guilt sharpens fear into insight. "Putrahantā", "the killer of the son" — he does not dispute the charge, he only dreads the consequence. The verse teaches that a wrongdoer sees the inevitability of retribution for his deed more clearly than the righteous: a conscience unable to repent is nonetheless unable to deceive itself about the reckoning to come.
