देवनागरी
एवम् उक्तस् त्व् अवाक्शीर्षो विमनाः स सुयोधनः ॥
श्रुत्वाभिशप्तवन्तं त्वां ध्यानम् एवान्वपद्यत ॥
तम् आर्तम् अभिसंप्रेक्ष्य राजा किल स सैन्धवः ॥
मृदु चात्महितं चैव सापेक्षम् इदम् उक्तवान् ॥

अनुवाद
Thus hearing this, head hung low, downcast Suyodhana, listening to the one who upbraided them, sank into brooding. Looking upon him, distressed, that king of Sindhu spoke — gently, to his own profit, and with an ulterior motive — the following word.

The narrator spares nothing even in describing Jayadratha's speech: it is "mṛdu ca ātmahitam ca… sāpekṣam", "gentle, to his own profit, calculated." Even the praise of Arjuna that he is about to lavish is prompted not by truth for truth's sake, but by the wish to bargain for his own protection. It is significant how the two are contrasted: Suyodhana is crushed, while his brother-in-law deftly weaves a flattering, self-serving speech. The verse teaches discernment of self-interest beneath soft words: speech calculated for one's own gain remains a bargain however sweetly it sounds, and the wise listen not to the sweetness but to the intent.
