धृतराष्ट्र उवाच
श्वोभूते किम् अकार्षुस् ते दुःखशोकसमन्विताः ॥
अभिमन्यौ हते तत्र के वायुध्यन्त मामकाः ॥
जानन्तस् तस्य कर्माणि कुरवः सव्यसाचिनः ॥
कथं तत् किल्बिषं कृत्वा निर्भया ब्रूहि मामकाः ॥

"In the morning, what did they do, overwhelmed with grief and sorrow? When Abhimanyu was slain there, who among mine fought on? Knowing the deeds of Savyasachin, how, having committed that sin, did mine remain fearless — tell me, [O Sanjaya]?"

The blind king begins with the right question: 'kathaṃ tat kilbiṣaṃ kṛtvā nirbhayāḥ' — 'how, having committed that sin, did they remain fearless?' He himself names the deed 'kilbiṣam,' a sin, and marvels that the guilty do not tremble. It is telling that Dhritarashtra sees the wrong clearly — yet he saw it before too, and stopped nothing. The verse teaches that recognizing sin is not enough: a king who perceives his sons' wrongdoing yet indulged it condemns not them alone but himself; and his anxiety is the belated echo of a conscience that lacked the will to act in its hour.
