यदा प्रभृत्य् उपप्लव्याच् छान्तिम् इच्छञ् जनार्दनः ॥
आगतः सर्वभूतानाम् अनुकम्पार्थम् अच्युतः ॥
ततो ऽहम् अब्रुवं सूत मन्दं दुर्योधनं तदा ॥
वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन पुत्र संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ॥
कालप्राप्तम् अहं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः ॥
शमे चेद् याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम् ॥
हितार्थम् अभिजल्पन्तं न तथास्त्य् अपराजयः ॥
yadā prabhṛty upaplavyāc chāntim icchañ janārdanaḥ ||
āgataḥ sarvabhūtānām anukampārtham acyutaḥ ||
tato 'ham abruvaṃ sūta mandaṃ duryodhanaṃ tadā ||
vāsudevena tīrthena putra saṃśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ||
kālaprāptam ahaṃ manye mā tvaṃ duryodhanātigāḥ ||
śame ced yācamānaṃ tvaṃ pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam ||
hitārtham abhijalpantaṃ na tathāsty aparājayaḥ ||
"Ever since Achyuta Janardana came from Upaplavya, desiring peace, out of compassion for all beings, then, O charioteer, I said to dull-witted Duryodhana: 'Son, make peace with the Pandavas through Vasudeva as through a sacred ford; I consider this timely. Do not transgress this, O Duryodhana; if you reject Keshava, who pleads for peace…'"

The image 'vāsudevena tīrthena,' 'through Vasudeva as through a [sacred] ford,' runs deep: Krishna, who came 'sarvabhūtānām anukampārtham,' out of compassion for all beings, is himself the tirtha — the crossing to peace and salvation. It is telling that the Lord Himself came as an envoy of peace, and to reject Him is to reject salvation itself. Dhritarashtra remembers his own good counsel — but only as words, not as will. The verse teaches that God comes to people for their own good, opening the path of reconciliation; and one who rejects the hand He extends rejects not a man but the sole crossing over the abyss of enmity.
