हिमात्यये यथा कक्षं शुष्कं वातेरितो महान् ॥
अग्निर् दहेत् तथा सेनां मामिकां स धनंजयः ॥
आचक्ष्व तद् धि नः सर्वं कुशलो ह्य् असि संजय ॥
यद् उपायात् तु सायाह्ने कृत्वा पार्थस्य किल्बिषम् ॥
अभिमन्यौ हते तात कथम् आसीन् मनो हि वः ॥
himātyaye yathā kakṣaṃ śuṣkaṃ vāterito mahān ||
agnir dahet tathā senāṃ māmikāṃ sa dhanaṃjayaḥ ||
ācakṣva tad dhi naḥ sarvaṃ kuśalo hy asi saṃjaya ||
yad upāyāt tu sāyāhne kṛtvā pārthasya kilbiṣam ||
abhimanyau hate tāta katham āsīn mano hi vaḥ ||
"As a great fire, fanned by the wind at winter's end, would burn dry brushwood — so will that Dhananjaya burn my army. Tell us all of that, for you are skilled, O Sanjaya — what happened when, having committed a sin against Partha, he came at dusk."

The image "agniḥ dahet… senāṃ māmikām", "fire will burn my army," is exact: Arjuna's wrath, like a forest fire in dry brush, will consume an army withered by its own wrongdoing. It is telling that the king himself likens his army to dry grass, ready for burning. The verse teaches that an unjust cause dooms itself: an army without support in dharma is like dry brush before fire; and the retribution of righteous wrath finds it as flame finds withered grass, for wrongdoing strips away the strength to resist.
