ज्याघोषो ब्रह्मघोषश् च तोमरासिरथध्वनिः ॥
द्रोणस्यासीद् अविरतो गृहे तन् न शृणोम्य् अहम् ॥
नानादेशसमुत्थानां गीतानां यो ऽभवत् स्वनः ॥
वादित्रनादितानां च सो ऽद्य न श्रूयते महान् ॥
jyāghoṣo brahmaghoṣaś ca tomarāsirathadhvaniḥ ||
droṇasyāsīd avirato gṛhe tan na śṛṇomy aham ||
nānādeśasamutthānāṃ gītānāṃ yo 'bhavat svanaḥ ||
vāditranāditānāṃ ca so 'dya na śrūyate mahān ||
"The twang of the bowstring and the sound of the Vedas, the din of javelins, swords, and chariots, were unceasing in Drona's house — I no longer hear that in [his] house. Whatever was the sound of songs arising [from] various lands, and of resounding [musical] instruments — it is not heard now, that great sound."

In Drona's house two sounds have fallen silent at once: 'jyāghoṣaḥ brahmaghoṣaḥ ca,' the twang of the bowstring and the voice of the Vedas — arms and the Veda, valor and learning, which the teacher united in himself. It is telling that precisely this duality is silenced: with the fading of the lineage both strength and knowledge are extinguished. The verse teaches that even in the greatest place — where martial might and holy word once met — wrongdoing breaks through the silence: neither weapons nor the Veda preserved a house that had taken the side of unrighteousness, and both voices fell mute together.
