तयोः शङ्खप्रणादेन तव सैन्ये विशां पते ॥
आसन् संहृष्टरोमाणः कम्पिता गतचेतसः ॥
यथा त्रसन्ति भूतानि सर्वाण्य् अशनिनिस्वनात् ॥
तथा शङ्खप्रणादेन वित्रेसुस् तव सैनिकाः ॥
प्रसुस्रुवुः शकृन्मूत्रं वाहनानि च सर्वशः ॥
एवं सवाहनं सर्वम् आविग्नम् अभवद् बलम् ॥
tayoḥ śaṅkhapraṇādena tava sainye viśāṃ pate ||
āsan saṃhṛṣṭaromāṇaḥ kampitā gatacetasaḥ ||
yathā trasanti bhūtāni sarvāṇy aśaninisvanāt ||
tathā śaṅkhapraṇādena vitresus tava sainikāḥ ||

At the sound of those two conches in your army, O lord of peoples, the warriors' hair stood on end, trembling, losing their senses. As all beings tremble at the roar of the thunderbolt, so your warriors trembled at the sound of the conches. The draft animals everywhere voided dung and urine; thus the whole army, with its beasts, fell into confusion.

The mere sound of the conches — Arjuna's and Krishna's — casts the army into terror before a single arrow is loosed: "vitresuḥ... āvignam abhavat balam." The voice of the charioteer-God acts like the roar of the thunderbolt. It is significant that the unrighteous army is broken by fear before it even joins battle: conscience and doom strip it of courage. The verse teaches that the Lord's presence alone is dreadful to untruth: His voice crushes the spirit of those who oppose Him before any weapon is raised; and where an army stands on the side of lawlessness, the mere sound of God's conch turns it to trembling.
