ततः शङ्खाश् च भेर्यश् च मृदङ्गाश् चानकैः सह ॥
पुनर् एवाभ्यहन्यन्त तव सैन्यप्रहर्षणाः ॥
नानावादित्रसंह्रादैः क्ष्वेडितास्फोटिताकुलैः ॥
सिंहनादैः सवादित्रैः समाहूतैर् महारथैः ॥
तस्मिन् सुतुमुले शब्दे भीरूणां भयवर्धने ॥
अतीव हृष्टो दाशार्हम् अब्रवीत् पाकशासनिः ॥
tataḥ śaṅkhāś ca bheryaś ca mṛdaṅgāś cānakaiḥ saha ||
punar evābhyahanyanta tava sainyapraharṣaṇāḥ ||
nānāvāditrasaṃhrādaiḥ kṣveḍitāsphoṭitākulaiḥ ||
siṃhanādaiḥ savāditraiḥ samāhūtair mahārathaiḥ ||
tasmin sutumule śabde bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhane ||
atīva hṛṣṭo dāśārham abravīt pākaśāsaniḥ ||
Then conches and kettledrums, and mridangas with drums, heartening your army, sounded once more. In that tumultuous din — of the varied sounds of instruments, full of shouts and claps, of lion-roars and music, raised by the summoned warriors — increasing the fear of the timid, the exceedingly joyful son of Pakashasana [Arjuna] said to Dasharha [Krishna].

The Kauravas strive to hearten themselves with the din — "sainyapraharṣaṇāḥ," heartening; yet the same noise "bhīrūṇāṃ bhayavardhane," increases the fear of the timid. And Arjuna amid it is "atīva hṛṣṭaḥ," exceedingly joyful. It is significant how the same noise works oppositely: for the unrighteous — a mounting of fear; for the righteous — joy. The verse teaches that the same outward thing acts oppositely according to inward state: where conscience is clear, the din of battle breeds courage; where it is not, the same din only multiplies dread — for fear is born within, not without.
