Scorched by grief for his son, enraged like Death the Ender, sparing not his life amid the tumult, armored, fighting in many ways, plunging into the ranks like a lord elephant, the great archer, valiant, the tiger among men — him they tried to hold back. Then a battle broke out, tumultuous, hair-raising, between those warriors and Arjuna, who longed for each other's destruction. The one eager to kill Jayadratha, the advancing bull among men, they held back together, as remedies hold back a disease that has flared up.

The image "kriyāḥ vyādhim iva utthitam," "as remedies hold back a disease that has flared up," is telling: to this multitude of warriors, Arjuna looks like an illness that must be checked by combined means. But he is an illness only to them, for they stand on the side of unrighteousness; to dharma, he is the cure. The verse teaches that the same reality looks different depending on which side of truth one stands: the executor of God's will appears to the unrighteous as a disease to be held back together, while to the righteous he is the world's healing; and which side one is on determines what the approaching reckoning looks like to him.
