कुनृपस्य यथा राष्ट्रं दुर्भिक्षव्याधितस्करैः ॥
द्राव्यते तद्वद् आपन्ना पाण्डवैस् तव वाहिनी ॥
अर्करश्मिप्रभिन्नेषु शस्त्रेषु कवचेषु च ॥
चक्षूंषि प्रतिहन्यन्ते सैन्येन रजसा तथा ॥

अनुवाद
As the realm of an unworthy king is ruined by famine, disease and thieves, so, beset by the Pandavas, [is destroyed] your army. In the weapons and armor flashing with the sun's rays, and by the dust of the army as well, eyes are blinded.

The comparison runs deep: Duryodhana's army perishes, "as the realm of an unworthy king" perishes. The narrator ties the rout to 'kunṛpa,' misrule: the people's calamity is the fruit of an unrighteous sovereign. It is telling that the cause of ruin is traced to a moral flaw in the leader. The verse teaches that the calamity of a realm is rooted in the unrighteousness of its ruler: as an unworthy king ruins his kingdom through famine and disorder, so an unrighteous leader brings his army to ruin; and collapse is no cruel accident but the fruit of corrupt leadership.
