भीमसेनं तु कौन्तेयं सोदर्याः पर्यवारयन् ॥
विविंशतिश् चित्रसेनो विकर्णश् च महारथः ॥
विन्दानुविन्दाव् आवन्त्यौ क्षेमधूर्तिश् च वीर्यवान् ॥
त्रयाणां तव पुत्राणां त्रय एवानुयायिनः ॥
बाह्लीकराजस् तेजस्वी कुलपुत्रो महारथः ॥
सहसेनः सहामात्यो द्रौपदेयान् अवारयत् ॥
bhīmasenaṃ tu kaunteyaṃ sodaryāḥ paryavārayan ||
viviṃśatiś citraseno vikarṇaś ca mahārathaḥ ||
vindānuvindāv āvantyau kṣemadhūrtiś ca vīryavān ||
trayāṇāṃ tava putrāṇāṃ traya evānuyāyinaḥ ||
bāhlīkarājas tejasvī kulaputro mahārathaḥ ||
sahasenaḥ sahāmātyo draupadeyān avārayat ||

It is telling that the battle resolves into predestined pairs. The verse teaches that in the great reckoning each meets his own: fate arranges the combatants in pairs, matching debtor to creditor in blood; the general chaos of the fight is in truth composed of countless preordained personal encounters, where each must play out his allotted part.
