तेषु प्रक्षीयमाणेषु पाण्डवेयेषु भारत ॥
जरासंधसुतो वीरः स्वयं द्रोणम् उपाद्रवत् ॥
स तु द्रोणं महाराज छादयन् सायकैः शितैः ॥
अदृश्यम् अकरोत् तूर्णं जलदो भास्करं यथा ॥
तस्य तल् लाघवं दृष्ट्वा द्रोणः क्षत्रियमर्दनः ॥
व्यसृजत् सायकांस् तूर्णं शतशो ऽथ सहस्रशः ॥
छादयित्वा रणे द्रोणो रथस्थं रथिनां वरम् ॥
जारासंधिम् अथो जघ्ने मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥

tasya tal lāghavaṃ dṛṣṭvā droṇaḥ kṣatriyamardanaḥ ||
vyasṛjat sāyakāṃs tūrṇaṃ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ ||
chādayitvā raṇe droṇo rathasthaṃ rathināṃ varam ||
jārāsaṃdhim atho jaghne miṣatāṃ sarvadhanvinām ||
As the Pandavas were dwindling, O Bharata, the heroic son of Jarasandha himself charged at Drona. Covering Drona with sharp arrows, he swiftly made him invisible, as a cloud veils the sun. Seeing that lightness of his hand, Drona, crusher of kshatriyas, swiftly loosed arrows by the hundreds and thousands. Having covered in battle that foremost of charioteers standing upon his chariot, Drona then slew the son of Jarasandha before the eyes of all the archers.

One formidable warrior after another rushes at Drona and perishes: the courage of many breaks against the mastery of one. It is telling that even the one who for a moment hid Drona from view, "jaladaḥ bhāskaraṃ yathā," as a cloud hides the sun, was struck down by the master. The verse teaches that to eclipse the great for a moment is not to defeat them: a cloud may hide the sun for an instant, but it does not extinguish it, and whoever dares to obscure the mighty only hastens his own end.
