कर्णो जेष्यति संग्रामे सहितान् पाण्डवान् इति ॥
जयाशा यत्र मन्दस्य पुत्रस्य मम संयुगे ॥
स कथं भीमकर्माणं भीमसेनम् अयुध्यत ॥

bhīmo vā sūtaputreṇa smaran vairaṃ purā kṛtam ||
so 'yudhyata kathaṃ vīraḥ karṇena saha saṃyuge ||
āśāste ca sadā sūta putro duryodhano mama ||
karṇo jeṣyati saṃgrāme sahitān pāṇḍavān iti ||
jayāśā yatra mandasya putrasya mama saṃyuge ||
sa kathaṃ bhīmakarmāṇaṃ bhīmasenam ayudhyata ||
Brotherhood was shown by Karna before, and that suta's son is compassionate; how did he fight with Bhima, remembering Kunti's word? Or did Bhima, remembering the enmity wrought of old, fight against Karna in battle, the hero? And my son Duryodhana, O charioteer, always trusts: 'Karna will conquer the united Pandavas in battle.'

Dhritarashtra remembers: Karna showed brotherhood and is bound by "kuntyāḥ vākyam," Kunti's word — a vow to spare the Pandavas except Arjuna. Thus the enemy secretly carries a kinsman's duty. It is telling that even in the thick of enmity a hidden loyalty of blood endures. The verse teaches that the bonds of kin and a given word rule the heart even amid strife: Karna, fighting against his brothers, keeps his vow to spare them — and this hidden faithfulness raises him above the enmity itself.
