Then Karna, enraged [in] battle, hard-pressed by the firm-bowed one, swift, made a surge [toward] the slaying of Bhimasena. At him Karna, impatient, strong, enraged, sent a hundred arrows [with] vulture-feathers, O Bharata. Then the Pandava let loose fierce showers of arrows, [in] battle disdaining him, not reckoning his valor. Then Karna, O great king, enraged, the scorcher of foes, struck the Pandava, [who was] wrathful in form, [in] the chest with sharp arrows.

Bhima 'disdains' Karna's valor — not out of arrogance but out of detachment: one who has surrendered his life does not weigh the enemy's strength. It is telling that both are called wrathful in form: fury has become their shared appearance. The verse teaches that in a clash of equals, the advantage comes not from gauging the other's power but from the readiness to disregard it; yet the anger that grips them both leads only to mutual exhaustion, not to resolution.
