सर्वे च समपश्यन्त तद् युद्धम् अतिमानुषम् ॥
तयोर् नृवरयो राजन् सारथ्यं दारुकस्य च ॥
गतप्रत्यागतावृत्तैर् मण्डलैः संनिवर्तनैः ॥
सारथेस् तु रथस्थस्य काश्यपेयस्य विस्मिताः ॥
नभस्तलगताश् चैव देवगन्धर्वदानवाः ॥
अतीवावहिता द्रष्टुं कर्णशैनेययो रणम् ॥
मित्रार्थे तौ पराक्रान्तौ स्पर्धिनौ शुष्मिणौ रणे ॥
कर्णश् चामरसंकाशो युयुधानश् च सात्यकिः ॥
sarve ca samapaśyanta tad yuddham atimānuṣam ||
tayor nṛvarayo rājan sārathyaṃ dārukasya ca ||
gatapratyāgatāvṛttair maṇḍalaiḥ saṃnivartanaiḥ ||
sārathes tu rathasthasya kāśyapeyasya vismitāḥ ||
nabhastalagatāś caiva devagandharvadānavāḥ ||
atīvāvahitā draṣṭuṃ karṇaśaineyayo raṇam ||
mitrārthe tau parākrāntau spardhinau śuṣmiṇau raṇe ||
karṇaś cāmarasaṃkāśo yuyudhānaś ca sātyakiḥ ||
And all gazed upon that superhuman battle of those two best of men, O king, and upon the charioteering of Daruka. All were astonished at the charioteer, standing upon the chariot, the Kashyapeya [Daruka], with his wheelings forward and back, his circles, his turns. And those dwelling in the sky — gods, gandharvas, danavas — were most attentive to watch the battle of Karna and Shainya. For a friend's sake those two were eager, rivaling, fierce in battle — Karna, resembling an immortal, and Yuyudhana Satyaki.

Not only the warriors but the charioteer Daruka too astonishes all with his skill: a feat is the work of many hands, and the charioteer shares honor equally with the warrior. It is notable that both fight "for a friend's sake" (mitrarthe): here too the moving force is not gain but devotion. The verse teaches that the grandeur of a battle is woven from the harmony of many services; and valor nourished by love for a friend rises so high that even the gods bow to watch.
