Дурьодхана
मातुलेनैवम् उक्तस् तु द्रौणिः शस्त्रभृतां वरः ॥
दुर्योधनम् इदं वाक्यं त्वरितं समभाषत ॥
मयि जीवति गान्धारे न युद्धं गन्तुम् अर्हसि ॥
माम् अनादृत्य कौरव्य तव नित्यं हितैषिणम् ॥
न हि ते संभ्रमः कार्यः पार्थस्य विजयं प्रति ॥
अहम् आवारयिष्यामि पार्थं तिष्ठ सुयोधन ॥
दुर्योधन उवाच
आचार्यः पाण्डुपुत्रान् वै पुत्रवत् परिरक्षति ॥
त्वम् अप्य् उपेक्षां कुरुषे तेषु नित्यं द्विजोत्तम ॥
मम वा मन्दभाग्यत्वान् मन्दस् ते विक्रमो युधि ॥
धर्मराजप्रियार्थं वा द्रौपद्या वा न विद्म तत् ॥
mātulenaivam uktas tu drauṇiḥ śastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ||
duryodhanam idaṃ vākyaṃ tvaritaṃ samabhāṣata ||
mayi jīvati gāndhāre na yuddhaṃ gantum arhasi ||
mām anādṛtya kauravya tava nityaṃ hitaiṣiṇam ||
na hi te saṃbhramaḥ kāryaḥ pārthasya vijayaṃ prati ||
aham āvārayiṣyāmi pārthaṃ tiṣṭha suyodhana ||
duryodhana uvāca
ācāryaḥ pāṇḍuputrān vai putravat parirakṣati ||
tvam apy upekṣāṃ kuruṣe teṣu nityaṃ dvijottama ||
mama vā mandabhāgyatvān mandas te vikramo yudhi ||
dharmarājapriyārthaṃ vā draupadyā vā na vidma tat ||
Thus counseled by his uncle, Drauni [Ashvatthaman], best of warriors, hastily spoke these words to Duryodhana: 'While I am alive, O Gandhara, you must not go into battle, disregarding me, your ever-constant well-wisher. You need not be troubled about Partha's victory; I shall repel Partha -- stand firm, Suyodhana.' [Duryodhana:] 'The teacher [Drona] protects the sons of Pandu as his own sons; and you too show constant negligence toward them, O best of brahmins.'

Ashvatthaman restrains the king with his own presence -- 'while I live, do not go'; but Duryodhana, ungrateful, reproaches him and Drona for supposed favoritism toward the Pandavas. It is notable that he repays a faithful protector with suspicion. The verse teaches that persistence in wrong blinds one to devotion; and one whose hope is fading blames the most loyal, unable to see that the cause of defeat lies in his own cause.
