तस्मात् अग्निः समिधः यस्य सूर्यः सोमात् पर्जन्यः ओषधयः पृथिव्याम् ।
पुमान् रेतः सिञ्चति योषितायां बह्वीः प्रजाः पुरुषात् संप्रसूताः ॥

अनुवाद
From Him comes fire, whose fuel is the sun; from the soma, rain; [from rain,] the herbs upon the earth. The man pours the seed into the woman: thus from the Puruṣa have many beings issued.

The chain of life's descent — from heaven to the cradle. tasmād agniḥ samidho yasya sūryaḥ — "from Him is fire, whose samidh (kindling) is the sun": the heavenly fire is lit from the sun as the sacrificial fire from a log; somāt parjanyaḥ — "from the soma, rain": the moon-soma, the store of saps, pours itself out as rain; oṣadhayaḥ pṛthivyām — the herbs on earth: rain becomes grain; pumān retaḥ siñcati yoṣitāyām — "the man pours the seed into the woman": grain becomes food, food seed, seed a child.
bahvīḥ prajāḥ puruṣāt samprasūtāḥ — "many beings are born from the Puruṣa": the conclusion closes the chain upon its Source: sun, rain, grain, seed are only links; the begetter in every begetting is He. Every child comes into the world down this ladder from heaven: through light, water, bread and love — from the Puruṣa.
The Gītā (3.14) will compress this chain into a wheel of duty: annād bhavanti bhūtāni parjanyād anna-sambhavaḥ / yajñād bhavati parjanyaḥ — "from food come beings, from rain comes food, from sacrifice comes rain": man is built into the round of heaven and bread and is obliged to keep it turning by sacrifice. And the Muṇḍaka adds the essential thing: the wheel has an Axle — and parenthood, a link in this chain, is a participation in the outpouring of life from the Puruṣa: a holy thing, not a physiology.
