न तत्र सूर्यः भाति न चन्द्रतारकं न इमाः विद्युतः भान्ति कुतः अयम् अग्निः ।
तम् एव भान्तम् अनुभाति सर्वं तस्य भासा सर्वम् इदं विभाति ॥

अनुवाद
There the sun does not shine, nor the moon with the stars, nor these lightnings — how much less this fire! Everything shines only after Him, the Shining One: by His light all this is radiant.

The great hymn to the Light of lights — the Muṇḍaka shares it with the Kaṭha (5.15) and the Śvetāśvatara: a threefold testimony to one truth in three Upaniṣads, the highest seal of authenticity. na tatra sūryo bhāti — "there the sun does not shine": before Him the sun is not a source but the lit; na candra-tārakam — nor the moon with the stars; nemā vidyuto bhānti — nor these lightnings; kuto 'yam agniḥ — "how much less this fire" — our own, domestic one.
tam eva bhāntam anubhāti sarvam — "everything shines only after Him, the Shining One": anu-bhāti — "shines after", reflects: the whole ladder of the world's lights is borrowed; tasya bhāsā sarvam idaṁ vibhāti — "by His light all this shines variously" (vi-bhāti: manifoldly, each in its own way — by one Light).
The Gītā (15.12) applies the formula to Himself: yad āditya-gataṁ tejo… mattaḥ — "the splendour that is in the sun, in the moon and in fire — know it to be Mine". For the life of the heart this verse is a reversal of sight: the beauty of dawn, the brilliance of a thought, the light in the eyes of the beloved — all is anubhāti, all a reflection of one Face; the world becomes a stained-glass window, and one who has learned to see through the panes no longer worships the panes — but neither does he break them: he thanks them for the Light they let through.
