देवनागरी
अराः इव रथनाभौ संहताः यत्र नाड्यः ।
सः एषः अन्तः चरते बहुधा जायमानः ।
ओम् इति एवं ध्यायथ आत्मानं स्वस्ति वः पाराय तमसः परस्तात् ॥

saḥ eṣaḥ antaḥ carate bahudhā jāyamānaḥ |

Where the channels [of the heart] converge like spokes in the hub of a wheel — there He moves within, being born in manifold ways. "Oṁ" — thus contemplate the Ātman. Well-being to you — [may you cross] to the far shore of darkness!

The meeting place is named and a blessing given. arā iva ratha-nābhau saṁhatā yatra nāḍyaḥ — "where the channels converge like spokes in a hub": the heart, the knot of a hundred and one channels (Praśna 3.6, Kaṭha 6.16): man's spiritual centre is no abstract "depth" but a living knot in which his whole life is plaited. sa eṣo 'ntaś carate bahudhā jāyamānaḥ — "there He moves within, being born in manifold ways": the Lord in the heart is no statue — He lives there: He moves, appearing as mind, memory, conscience, inspiration — "born in manifold ways" in every inward event.
om ity evaṁ dhyāyatha ātmānam — "'Oṁ' — thus contemplate the Ātman": the name is given as a means of meeting: sound is the path to Him who dwells in the knot of the heart (the bow of the praṇava — verse 36 — is drawn precisely here).
And then — a rarity in the Upaniṣads — a direct blessing upon the readers: svasti vaḥ pārāya tamasaḥ parastāt — "well-being to you, for the crossing to the far shore of darkness!" The teacher breaks off his exposition to bless them for the journey: so one sees off not listeners but travellers. Darkness (tamas) is everything: ignorance, death, fear; the far shore is the Light of which the next verses will say: "the light of lights".
