आविः संनिहितं गुहाचरं नाम महत् पदम् अत्र एतत् समर्पितम् ।
एजत् प्राणत् निमिषत् च यत् एतत् जानथ सत् असत् वरेण्यं परं विज्ञानात् यत् वरिष्ठं प्रजानाम् ॥

अनुवाद
The manifest, the near, moving in the secret place [of the heart] — that is the great abode; in it is centred all that moves and breathes and blinks. Know this — the existent and the more-than-existent, the most desirable, the highest, beyond the understanding of beings — the very best!

The second section of the second muṇḍaka opens with a paradox of location: āviḥ sannihitam — "the manifest, laid close at hand": the Highest is not hidden — it is more obvious than the obvious; and at the same time guhācaram — "moving in the secret place" of the heart: nearer than all nearness. mahat padam — "the great abode" (pada is at once "foot", "station" and "goal"): atraitat samarpitam — "into this everything is committed": ejat prāṇat nimiṣac ca — "what moves and breathes and blinks": all that lives, down to the last blink, is centred in Him.
And a cascade of superlative names: sad asat — "the existent and the more-than-existent" (the manifest and the unmanifest); vareṇyam — "the most desirable, the most choice" (that very word from the Gāyatrī mantra!); paraṁ vijñānāt — "beyond understanding"; variṣṭhaṁ prajānām — "the very best for beings". Note the combination: beyond understanding — and most desirable: He cannot be encompassed by the mind, but He can be desired by the heart; inaccessible to thought, He is accessible to love — here the Muṇḍaka breathes the same air as the Kena with its Tadvana ("That Desirable").
jānatha — "know!" — a plural imperative, solemn as a call: the Upaniṣad does not argue — it summons. The next verses will say with what and how this "knowing" is done: a bow, an arrow and a target will be needed.
