Meanwhile there lived a certain sage named Ayoda-Dhaumya. He had three pupils: Upamanyu, Aruni, and Veda. One of the pupils, Aruni of Panchala, he sent, saying, "Go, close the breach in the embankment of the field." Sent by his teacher, Aruni of Panchala, having gone there, was unable to close that breach in the embankment. Growing exhausted, he found a way: "Let it be so -- I shall do this." And he himself lay down in that breach of the embankment. When he lay down, the water stopped. After some time, the teacher Ayoda-Dhaumya asked his pupils, "Where has Aruni of Panchala gone?" They answered, "You yourself sent him: 'Go, close the breach in the embankment.'" Hearing this, the teacher said to the pupils, "Well then, let us all go there, where he is." Having gone there, he raised a cry, calling out to him: "O Aruni of Panchala, where are you? Child, come here!" Hearing that word of his teacher, Aruni at once rose up out of that embankment and stood before him. And he said to him, "Here I am; I lay down to hold back the escaping, unchecked water in this embankment, but hearing the master's call, I broke open the embankment and hastened to you. I salute you, lord! Command me: what shall I do?" The teacher answered him, "Since you rose having broken open the embankment (kedara), henceforth you shall be called by the name Uddalaka (the Breaker)." And blessing him, he said, "Since you carried out my word, you shall attain good fortune: all the Vedas and all the dharma-shastras shall shine forth in you of themselves."
