This mysterious episode is full of hidden meaning. The gigantic bull is Airavata, king of elephants (or the bull of dharma itself), and the man mounted upon it is Indra, lord of the gods, in disguised form; the ‘dung and urine’ is amrita, the nectar of immortality, offered in an unseemly guise. Uttanka partakes of it only because the man invokes the example of the guru and tells him ‘not to hesitate’ — and this trusting submission will save his life, for the nectar he tastes will later protect him in the world of serpents. Here lies a profound lesson: grace from above often comes in a form unacceptable to reason and the senses, and only one who has risen above worldly squeamishness through faith can receive it. Just as the devotee accepts prasad and the will of the Lord without judging by worldly measures, Uttanka accepts the gift of the gods. What is repugnant to the proud mind proves to be the nectar of immortality for humble faith — such is the path of surrender to the higher will.
