This mystical hymn unveils, behind the curtain of appearances, a cosmic order governed by a higher will. The two weaving maidens are Dhata and Vidhata (ordinance and fate), or day and night; the black and white threads are the succession of times; the six boys are the seasons; the wheel is the year and the wheel of time (kala-chakra). Uttanka perceives that the whole visible world is but a "cloth of the universal form," ceaselessly woven and unwoven by the will of the Supreme. Though the hymn is addressed to Indra as guardian of order, behind him stands the Lord Himself — the true Master of time and the maker of this fabric of worlds, before whom Indra is but an empowered servant. "Time I am," says Krishna in the Gita. Thus the devotee, finding himself in a hopeless situation, discerns the hand of the Lord behind all the powers of the universe and surrenders to it. This vision of cosmic order gives rise not to fear but to reverence and surrender to the supreme will, which alone can deliver from any calamity.
