‘Or are you virtuous vaishyas, or born of a shudra womb, or siddhas who wander everywhere by magic, come for Krishna's sake, as if from heaven, to behold her? Tell us the truth, for our doubt here is great. May heartfelt joy enter us at the end of this doubt, may our fortunes be blessed, O scourge of foes. Be pleased to speak the truth: truth adorns kings, and for the merit of sacrifices and good deeds one must not speak falsehood. For, having heard, O godlike one, your word, O tamer of enemies, I shall surely proceed to perform the marriage according to rite.’

Here the king invokes truth, praising truthfulness as the adornment of kings. It is significant that the words ‘truth adorns kings’ appear — and Drupada pleads that they not lie for the sake of merit gained from sacrifices and good deeds. Here lies the height of satya [truthfulness]: truth is worth more than any merit, and falsehood defiles even piety. Thus the text reveals reverence for truth as the foundation of dharma; and Drupada makes the marriage conditional on a truthful answer.
