Here the arrangement is sealed by a rite before the sacred fire. It is significant that Yudhishthira calls this ‘dharma’ and wishes to sanctify it with fire: even the exceptional is carried out not arbitrarily but by rite and in purity. Here it is shown that Agni is the witness and sanctifier of marriage, and that a special dispensation needs a sacred seal. Thus the text reveals the reverent order even of an unprecedented union; and the marriage awaits the higher confirmation that Vyasa will bring.
