Here malice's first thought is discord and bribery. It is telling that Duryodhana begins with "bheda" — sowing division — and with bribes: treachery seeks to break unity and buy conscience. Here it becomes clear that dividing those who love one another and corrupting them with wealth is the weapon of untruth. Thus the text reveals evil's first ploys; and a sacred brotherhood is chosen as the target.
