Here even the villain dimly senses that his design is wrong. Telling is Duryodhana's own question, "is it good or bad?" — conscience, though stifled, still finds a voice. Here it becomes clear that even one set on evil is not wholly deaf to the discernment of good, though he smothers it. Thus the text reveals the last flicker of conscience in the wrongdoer; and, as we shall see, Karna's answer will reject treachery in favor of open combat.
