Here the hero places his vow above his own desire. It is telling that he says "I am not my own master": one who has bound himself by a vow does not consider himself free to break it. True freedom lies in fidelity to one's given word, not in indulging one's wishes. Thus the scripture reveals Arjuna's steadfastness in his vow; and without rejecting the naga maiden, he points to his own lack of freedom.
