यदि वाप्य् अस्य धर्मस्य सूक्ष्मो ऽपि स्याद् व्यतिक्रमः ॥
स च ते धर्म एव स्याद् दात्त्वा प्राणान् ममार्जुन ॥
भक्तां भजस्व मां पार्थ सताम् एतन् मतं प्रभो ॥
न करिष्यसि चेद् एवं मृतां माम् उपधारय ॥

Here the saving of life is proclaimed the highest dharma. It is telling that even a small departure becomes dharma so long as it saves a life -- for nonviolence and mercy stand above private vows. Love for a neighbor's life outweighs literal purity. Thus the scripture reveals the teaching of compassion's primacy; and Ulupi appeals to Arjuna's mercy.
