एतस्मिन् एव काले तुetasmin eva kāle tuAt this very time
जरासंधम् समर्चयन्jarāsaṃdham samarcayanthe priests were honoring Jarasandha,
पर्यग्नि कुर्वन् च नृपम्paryagni kurvan ca nṛpamencircling the king with fire,
द्विरद-स्थम् पुरोहिताःdvirada-stham purohitāḥseated on an elephant;
स्नातक-व्रतिनः ते तुsnātaka-vratinaḥ te tuthey, in the guise of snataka-vow-keepers,
बाहु-शस्त्राः निरायुधाःbāhu-śastrāḥ nirāyudhāḥwith their arms as weapons, without [other] weapons,
युयुत्सवः प्रविविशुःyuyutsavaḥ praviviśuḥeager for battle, entered [to fight]

ददृशुः श्रियम् उत्तमाम्dadṛśuḥ śriyam uttamāmand garlands they beheld the supreme splendor,

Here the unarmed advance upon an armed lord — with the strength of their arms alone. It is telling that they "are eager for battle" openly, in the garb of brahmins: their concealment is not cowardice but a stratagem against a tyrant too formidable for open war. Thus the text shows guile in the service of dharma; and further follows their formidable bearing amid the city.
