एवम् विराग-वसनाःevam virāga-vasanāḥThus, in dyed [bright] garments,
बहिः-माल्य-अनुलेपनाःbahiḥ-mālya-anulepanāḥopenly in garlands and unguents, —
सत्यम् वदत के यूयम्satyam vadata ke yūyamspeak the truth: who are you?
सत्यम् राजसु शोभतेsatyam rājasu śobhatetruth becomes royal men well;
चैत्यकम् च गिरेः शृङ्गम्caityakam ca gireḥ śṛṅgamand Chaityaka, the mountain's peak,
भित्त्वा किम् इव सद्म नःbhittvā kim iva sadma naḥhaving broken it, [as though] what is our dwelling to you? —
अद्वारेण प्रविष्टाः स्थadvāreṇa praviṣṭāḥ sthayou entered not through the gate,
निर्भयाः राज-किल्बिषात्nirbhayāḥ rāja-kilbiṣātunafraid of the king's punishment;
कर्म च एतत् विलिङ्गस्यkarma ca etat viliṅgasyaand this deed of one in disguise —
किम् वा अद्य प्रसमीक्षितम्kim vā adya prasamīkṣitamwhat [purpose] is now contemplated?
वदध्वम् वाचि वीर्यम् चvadadhvam vāci vīryam cashow forth valor in speech as well,
ब्राह्मणस्य विशेषतःbrāhmaṇasya viśeṣataḥespecially [as befits] a brahmin;
एवम् च माम् उपस्थायevam ca mām upasthāyaand, having thus approached me,
कस्मात् च विधिना अर्हणाम्kasmāt ca vidhinā arhaṇāmwhy the honor, offered by rite,
प्रणीताम् नः न गृह्णीतpraṇītām naḥ na gṛhṇītabrought by us, do you not accept?
कार्यम् किम् च अस्मत्-आगमेkāryam kim ca asmat-āgameand what purpose is there in your coming to us?"

Here the king, despite his distaste for their disguise, appeals to truth: 'speak the truth — truth becomes royal men well.' It is telling that even an enemy honors truthfulness as the ornament of the noble. Thus the verse shows that love of truth is the common possession of the worthy, enemies included; what follows is Krishna's reply.
