Fools seek to injure the wise with false reproaches and harsh words. As a result, they thereby take upon themselves the sins of the wise, while the wise, freed of their own sins, are absolved. In wrath lies the strength of the wicked; in the code of law lies the strength of kings and their care for the weak and for women; and in forgiveness lies the strength of the virtuous. It is said, O king, that nothing is harder to master than speech.

The fragment 5.34.51-55 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: an effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an unavoidable war. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of an embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility kings bear for the consequences of their decisions.
