अस्मान् अपि जघानाशु पीडयन् निशितैः शरैः ॥
ते पीड्यमाना द्रोणेन द्रोणानीकं न शक्नुमः ॥
प्रतिवीक्षितुम् अप्य् आजौ भेत्तुं तत् कुत एव तु ॥

Yudhishthira frankly admits their helplessness: "na śaknumaḥ prativīkṣitum api… bhettuṃ tat kutaḥ" — they could not even look upon Drona's formation, let alone break it. This is not an excuse but a truth that prepares the ground for the heavy word to come: this is why the boy had to be sent. It is telling that the king humbles himself, not concealing that the teacher's might surpassed them all. The verse teaches that an honest admission of one's own weakness is the beginning of a righteous answer: only by naming the trouble as it truly is can one understand at what cost it was met.
