वडानां वायसानां च पुरस्तात् सव्यसाचिनः ॥
बहुलानि सहस्राणि प्राक्रीडंस् तत्र भारत ॥
मृगाश् च घोरसंनादाः शिवाश् चाशिवदर्शनाः ॥
दक्षिणेन प्रयातानाम् अस्माकं प्राणदंस् तथा ॥
सनिर्घाता ज्वलन्त्यश् च पेतुर् उल्काः समन्ततः ॥
चचाल च मही कृत्स्ना भये घोरे समुत्थिते ॥
vaḍānāṃ vāyasānāṃ ca purastāt savyasācinaḥ ||
bahulāni sahasrāṇi prākrīḍaṃs tatra bhārata ||
mṛgāś ca ghorasaṃnādāḥ śivāś cāśivadarśanāḥ ||
dakṣiṇena prayātānām asmākaṃ prāṇadaṃs tathā ||
sanirghātā jvalantyaś ca petur ulkāḥ samantataḥ ||
cacāla ca mahī kṛtsnā bhaye ghore samutthite ||
Many thousands of herons and crows frolicked there ahead of Savyasachin, O Bharata. And beasts uttering a terrible roar, and she-jackals of ominous appearance, howled to the right of our advancing troops. With thunderclaps, blazing meteors fell everywhere; and the whole earth trembled when dread fear arose.

Omens distinguish sides: the birds frolic "purastāt savyasācinaḥ," ahead of Arjuna, while ominous she-jackals howl to the right of the Kaurava army. Nature itself foretells the outcome. It is significant that "bhaye ghore samutthite," dread fear rises before the battle — among those on the side of untruth. The verse teaches that creation is attuned to truth and untruth: it favors the righteous and terrifies the unrighteous with omens; and portents are not chance, but the language by which creation proclaims the coming judgment upon lawlessness.
