ततः कपिर् महानादं सह भूतैर् ध्वजालयैः ॥
अकरोद् व्यादितास्यश् च भीषयंस् तव सैनिकान् ॥

Men grew faint, O king, at the sound of the conches, O venerable one; some became senseless, others, O king, trembled. Then the monkey [on the banner], together with the beings dwelling on the banner, gaping its jaws, let forth a great roar, terrifying your warriors.

To the voice of the conches is joined the roar of Hanuman on Arjuna's banner — an image of perfect devotion turned against untruth. It is significant that even the banner of a righteous warrior is dreadful to the enemy: "bhīṣayan tava sainikān," it terrifies the warriors. The verse teaches that all that the Lord hallows becomes a force against evil: both the conch and the banner bearing Hanuman — the devotee of Rama — strike terror into the camp of lawlessness; for in God's presence even signs and sounds gain a power that casts the unrighteous into trembling.
