Shattered, scattered, burned by thunderbolt, wind, and fire — elephants alike in form fell, [like fragments] of mountain peaks, clouds, dwellings. Thousands of horses fell, struck down by Arjuna's arrows, [like] swans on the ridge of Himavat, as if struck down by hail. Streams of chariots, horses, elephants, and foot-soldiers, like wondrous streams of water, were slain by the Pandava's weapon-arrows, like the rays of the sun at the end of the age.

Images pile up: elephants like fragments of mountains and clouds, horses like swans felled by hail, the army like streams of water. Arjuna's arrows are 'yugāntāditya-raśmi,' rays of the sun at the end of the age. It is telling that the destruction is likened to the elements of pralaya, the dissolution of the world: righteous wrath acts like a cosmic fire. The verse teaches that retribution for lawlessness reaches the scale of the world's ending: when dharma is trampled, the answering blow is likened to the forces of the age's end; and through these images the poem shows how terrible is the consequence of unrighteousness that has shaken the very order of the world.
