एवं बहुविधं सैन्यम् एवं प्रविचितं वरम् ॥
व्यूढम् एवं यथान्यायम् एवं बहु च संजय ॥
नित्यं पूजितम् अस्माभिर् अभिकामं च नः सदा ॥
प्रौढम् अत्यद्भुताकारं पुरस्ताद् दृढविक्रमम् ॥

The blind king begins with a catalog of his army's greatness — choice, honored, valiant. Through this catalog already shows astonishment: how could all this not have helped? It is telling that the lament opens with pride, only to break against helplessness. The verse teaches that counting one's earthly supports is the beginning of a bitter awakening: one who relies on numbers and might sooner or later confronts the question of why all his strength proved futile.
