Having then regained his senses, Bhimasena, the mighty one, seized in battle a golden-shafted spear, wrought of iron. It, hurled from Bhima's arm, resembling a sloughed-off serpent, blazed forth most terribly [around] Kritavarman. As it came hurtling suddenly, blazing like the fire at the end of the age, the son of Hridika cut it in two with two arrows. It, severed, the gold-adorned spear, fell [to] the ground, lighting the directions, O king, like a great meteor fallen [from] heaven.

Bhima's dread spear, "yugāntāgnisamaprabhām," like the fire at the end of an age, is cut in two by two arrows and falls "maholkeva divaś cyutā," like a meteor from the heavens. Beauty within terror crowns even a failure. It is significant that even the mightiest weapon can be turned aside by skill. The verse teaches that power without precise mastery is vulnerable: dread strength, meeting a skillful hand, comes to nothing, and the shining fall of the spear reminds us that battles are decided not by fury alone but by skill.
