शिखण्डी तु ततः क्रुद्धश् छिन्ने धनुषि सत्वरम् ॥
असिं जग्राह समरे शतचन्द्रं च भास्वरम् ॥
भ्रामयित्वा महाचर्म चामीकरविभूषितम् ॥
तम् असिं प्रेषयाम् आस कृतवर्मरथं प्रति ॥
स तस्य सशरं चापं छित्त्वा संख्ये महान् असिः ॥
अभ्यगाद् धरणीं राजंश् च्युतं ज्योतिर् इवाम्बरात् ॥
śikhaṇḍī tu tataḥ kruddhaś chinne dhanuṣi satvaram ||
asiṃ jagrāha samare śatacandraṃ ca bhāsvaram ||
bhrāmayitvā mahācarma cāmīkaravibhūṣitam ||
tam asiṃ preṣayām āsa kṛtavarmarathaṃ prati ||
sa tasya saśaraṃ cāpaṃ chittvā saṃkhye mahān asiḥ ||
abhyagād dharaṇīṃ rājaṃś cyutaṃ jyotir ivāmbarāt ||
And Shikhandin then, enraged, [with] his bow cut, swiftly seized a sword in battle and a gleaming, hundred-mooned [shield]. Having whirled the great gold-adorned shield, he hurled that sword [at] the chariot of Kritavarman. That great sword, having cut his bow together with the arrow in battle, went [into] the ground, O king, like a light fallen [from] the sky.

Deprived of his bow, Shikhandin does not withdraw, but fights with sword and shield: resourcefulness does not lay down its arms. The sword, having cut the enemy's bow, falls "cyutaṃ jyotir iva ambarāt," like a fallen star. It is significant that the valiant find a means even when their accustomed weapon is lost. The verse teaches that true courage does not depend on a single tool: whoever holds firm his will fights with whatever is at hand, and does not abandon the task simply because his bow is broken.
