ऋषिपुत्रो ममाचार्यो द्रोणस्य दयितः सखा ॥
एष शेते रथोपस्थे मद्बाणैर् अभिपीडितः ॥
अकामयानेन मया विशिखैर् अर्दितो भृशम् ॥
अवासीदद् रथोपस्थे प्राणान् पीडयतीव मे ॥
शरार्दितेन हि मया प्रेक्षणीयो महाद्युतिः ॥
प्रत्यस्तो बहुभिर् बाणैर् दशधर्मगतेन वै ॥
शोचयत्य् एष निपतन् भूयः पुत्रवधाद् धि माम् ॥
कृपणं स्वरथे सन्नं पश्य कृष्ण यथा गतम् ॥

pratyasto bahubhir bāṇair daśadharmagatena vai ||
śocayaty eṣa nipatan bhūyaḥ putravadhād dhi mām ||
kṛpaṇaṃ svarathe sannaṃ paśya kṛṣṇa yathā gatam ||
"The seer's son, my teacher, Drona's beloved friend — he lies on the floor of his chariot, oppressed by my arrows. By me, who did not wish it, greatly tormented by arrows, he sank onto the chariot floor — as if it presses upon my own life breath. For by me, myself tormented by arrows, he has been struck down by many arrows — one worthy of gaze, greatly radiant, abiding in tenfold dharma [Kripa]. His fall grieves me more than the death of a son; behold, Krishna, to what he has come, pitiable, sunk upon his own chariot."

The teacher's fall wounds Arjuna more deeply than the death of his own son would: in the noble one's hierarchy of attachments, reverence for the guru stands at the summit. It is telling that Kripa is called "daśadharma-gata" — faithful to the tenfold dharma: the more righteous the one struck down, the heavier the guilt of the one who strikes him. The verse teaches that there are losses more painful than those of blood kin; and one who has struck down a revered figure bears a grief for which victory offers no consolation.
