यत् तत् पूर्वम् उपाकुर्वन्न् अस्त्रं माम् अब्रवीत् कृपः ॥
न कथं चन कौरव्य प्रहर्तव्यं गुराव् इति ॥
तद् इदं वचनं साधोर् आचार्यस्य महात्मनः ॥
नानुष्ठितं तम् एवाजौ विशिखैर् अभिवर्षता ॥
नमस् तस्मै सुपूज्याय गौतमायापलायिने ॥
धिग् अस्तु मम वार्ष्णेय यो ह्य् अस्मै प्रहराम्य् अहम् ॥
yat tat pūrvam upākurvann astraṃ mām abravīt kṛpaḥ ||
na kathaṃ cana kauravya prahartavyaṃ gurāv iti ||
tad idaṃ vacanaṃ sādhor ācāryasya mahātmanaḥ ||
nānuṣṭhitaṃ tam evājau viśikhair abhivarṣatā ||
namas tasmai supūjyāya gautamāyāpalāyine ||
dhig astu mama vārṣṇeya yo hy asmai praharāmy aham ||
"That which formerly, when imparting to me knowledge of weapons, Kripa said to me: 'In no way at all, O Kauravya, must one strike the teacher' — this word of the virtuous, great-souled teacher I have not fulfilled: I struck him himself in battle, showering him with arrows. Homage to that most worthy of honor, Gautama [Kripa], who never flees; shame upon me, O Varshneya, that I strike at him."

Arjuna recalls Kripa's own teaching — never to strike the teacher — and repents that he broke it against that very teacher. It is telling that he ends with homage to his foe and blame upon himself: reverence overcomes the pride of victory. The verse teaches that a teacher's word binds even when circumstance drives one to transgress it; and the truly noble one, unable to keep the vow, bows before the one he has struck, turning the reproach not on others but on himself.
