वासवाशनिनिर्घोषं दृढज्यम् अभिविक्षिपन् ॥
व्यक्तं किष्कुपरीणाहं द्वादशारत्नि कार्मुकम् ॥
रथाक्षमात्रैर् इषुभिः सर्वाः प्रच्छादयन् दिशः ॥
तस्यां वीरापहारिण्यां निशायां कर्णम् अभ्ययात् ॥
तस्य विक्षिपतश् चापं रथे विष्टभ्य तिष्ठतः ॥
अश्रूयत धनुर्घोषो विस्फूर्जितम् इवाशनेः ॥
तेन वित्रास्यमानानि तव सैन्यानि भारत ॥
समकम्पन्त सर्वाणि सिन्धोर् इव महोर्मयः ॥

vyaktaṃ kiṣkuparīṇāhaṃ dvādaśāratni kārmukam ||
rathākṣamātrair iṣubhiḥ sarvāḥ pracchādayan diśaḥ ||
tasyāṃ vīrāpahāriṇyāṃ niśāyāṃ karṇam abhyayāt ||
tasya vikṣipataś cāpaṃ rathe viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhataḥ ||
aśrūyata dhanurghoṣo visphūrjitam ivāśaneḥ ||
tena vitrāsyamānāni tava sainyāni bhārata ||
samakampanta sarvāṇi sindhor iva mahormayaḥ ||
With a roar like the thunderbolt of Vasava [Indra], brandishing his strong-stringed bow -- clearly a full arm's-span in girth, a bow twelve cubits long -- covering every direction with arrows as thick as a chariot axle, on that night that carries off heroes he attacked Karna. From him, brandishing his bow, standing braced upon his chariot, the twang of the bow was heard like the crash of a thunderbolt. Terrified by him, your armies, O Bharata, all trembled like the great waves of the ocean.

The night is called one 'that carries off heroes': time itself bears the mark of doom. It is telling that the armies tremble 'like waves of the sea' from the mere twang of a bow -- terror arrives before the blow. The verse teaches that a fearsome power terrifies already by its approach; and often the fear sown by the mere sight and sound of might strikes an army more surely than the arrows themselves -- for one whose spirit has faltered is already half defeated.
