स स्म कृत्वा विरूपाणि वदनान्य् अशुभाननः ॥
अग्रसत् सूतपुत्रस्य दिव्यान्य् अस्त्राणि मायया ॥
पुनश् चापि महाकायः संछिन्नः शतधा रणे ॥
गतसत्त्वो निरुत्साहः पतितः खाद् व्यदृश्यत ॥
हतं तं मन्यमानाः स्म प्राणदन् कुरुपुंगवाः ॥
अथ देहैर् नवैर् अन्यैर् दिक्षु सर्वास्व् अदृश्यत ॥
पुनश् चापि महाकायः शतशीर्षः शतोदरः ॥
व्यदृश्यत महाबाहुर् मैनाक इव पर्वतः ॥
अङ्गुष्ठमात्रो भूत्वा च पुनर् एव स राक्षसः ॥
सागरोर्मिर् इवोद्धूतस् तिर्यग् ऊर्ध्वम् अवर्तत ॥

agrasat sūtaputrasya divyāny astrāṇi māyayā ||
punaś cāpi mahākāyaḥ saṃchinnaḥ śatadhā raṇe ||
gatasattvo nirutsāhaḥ patitaḥ khād vyadṛśyata ||
hataṃ taṃ manyamānāḥ sma prāṇadan kurupuṃgavāḥ ||
atha dehair navair anyair dikṣu sarvāsv adṛśyata ||
punaś cāpi mahākāyaḥ śataśīrṣaḥ śatodaraḥ ||
vyadṛśyata mahābāhur maināka iva parvataḥ ||
aṅguṣṭhamātro bhūtvā ca punar eva sa rākṣasaḥ ||
sāgarormir ivoddhūtas tiryag ūrdhvam avartata ||
He, contorting his faces into hideous shapes, himself of ill-omened countenance, swallowed up the son of the suta's divine weapons by sorcery. And again the huge-bodied one, cut asunder a hundredfold in battle, lifeless and spiritless, was seen fallen from the sky; deeming him slain, the bulls of the Kurus rejoiced. Then he was seen in all directions with other, new bodies; and again the huge-bodied one, hundred-headed, hundred-bellied, was seen, mighty-armed, like Mount Mainaka.

Ghatotkacha now falls as though dead, now rises in many bodies, hundred-headed, like a mountain: sorcery turns death into semblance, semblance into new life. It is telling that the Kauravas rejoice too soon, deceived by illusion. The verse teaches that in a world of enchantment appearances deceive: death may be a mask, triumph a delusion; and one who trusts appearance is beguiled, for behind the veil of illusion truth remains hidden until its hour.
