तम् आयान्तम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य प्रत्यगृह्णात् तवात्मजः ॥
शरैश् चावाकिरद् राजञ् शैनेयं तनयस् तव ॥
ततः प्रववृते युद्धं कुरुमाधवसिंहयोः ॥
अन्योन्यं क्रुद्धयोर् घोरं यथा द्विरदसिंहयोः ॥
ततः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैः सात्वतं युद्धदुर्मदम् ॥
दुर्योधनः प्रत्यविध्यद् दशभिर् निशितैः शरैः ॥
तं सात्यकिः प्रत्यविद्धत् तथैव दशभिः शरैः ॥
पञ्चाशता पुनश् चाजौ त्रिंशता दशभिश् च ह ॥

tataḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭaiḥ sātvataṃ yuddhadurmadam ||
duryodhanaḥ pratyavidhyad daśabhir niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||
taṃ sātyakiḥ pratyaviddhat tathaiva daśabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||
pañcāśatā punaś cājau triṃśatā daśabhiś ca ha ||
Seeing him advancing, your son received [him] and showered with arrows, O king, Shaineya — your son [did]. Then the battle was joined between the lions — the Kuru prince and the Madhava — enraged at one another, terrible, as between an elephant and a lion. Then, with arrows loosed at full draw, Duryodhana pierced Satvata, furious in battle, in return with ten sharp arrows. Satyaki pierced him in return likewise with ten arrows, and again with fifty in battle, with thirty and ten.

No sooner have the words of friendship faded than the friends fight 'like an elephant and a lion': duty overpowers affection. It is telling that tenderness did not cancel the clash — it only sharpened its bitterness. The verse teaches that in a world ruled by the dharma of duty, even those who love are forced to fight; and the tragedy lies not in the absence of love but in love's powerlessness to stop the wheel of war once it has been set in motion.
