निहतो युधि विक्रम्य ततो ऽहं द्रोणम् अब्रुवम् ॥
अश्वत्थामा हतो ब्रह्मन् निवर्तस्वाहवाद् इति ॥
नूनं नाश्रद्दधद् वाक्यम् एष मे पुरुषर्षभः ॥
स त्वं गोविन्दवाक्यानि मानयस्व जयैषिणः ॥
द्रोणाय निहतं शंस राजञ् शारद्वतीसुतम् ॥
त्वयोक्तो नैष युध्येत जातु राजन् द्विजर्षभः ॥
सत्यवान् हि नृलोके ऽस्मिन् भवान् ख्यातो जनाधिप ॥
तस्य तद् वचनं श्रुत्वा कृष्णवाक्यप्रचोदितः ॥
भावित्वाच् च महाराज वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥

aśvatthāmā hato brahman nivartasvāhavād iti ||
nūnaṃ nāśraddadhad vākyam eṣa me puruṣarṣabhaḥ ||
sa tvaṃ govindavākyāni mānayasva jayaiṣiṇaḥ ||
droṇāya nihataṃ śaṃsa rājañ śāradvatīsutam ||
tvayokto naiṣa yudhyeta jātu rājan dvijarṣabhaḥ ||
satyavān hi nṛloke 'smin bhavān khyāto janādhipa ||
tasya tad vacanaṃ śrutvā kṛṣṇavākyapracoditaḥ ||
bhāvitvāc ca mahārāja vaktuṃ samupacakrame ||
"'Ashvatthaman is slain, O brahmin, leave the field of battle' — surely that bull among men [Drona] did not believe my word. But you, honor the words of Govinda, who desires victory; proclaim to Drona that [his son] is slain, O king — [no, only the elephant]. If said by you, he would never fight again, O king, bull among the twice-born; for you are renowned as truthful in this world of men, O lord of men." Having heard that word of his, impelled by Krishna's word, and by the will of fate, O great king, [Yudhishthira] began to speak.

All appeal to Yudhishthira's fame for truthfulness: only his word will Drona believe. It is telling that the righteous man's virtue turns into a weapon against his teacher — and "by the will of fate" he yields. The verse teaches that even holiness can be turned to evil by circumstance; and the greatest trial of the righteous is when his very truthfulness becomes the key to a fatal deception, and he is drawn toward a fall not by vice but by the trust his honesty inspires.
